E-TC girls take full share of PMC

The Daily Mining Gazette

WATERSMEET - Ewen-Trout Creek claimed full rights to its first Porcupine Mountain Conference girls' basketball championship since 2006 by defeating Watersmeet 44-26 Friday.

The Panthers (13-7) completed a 6-0 tour through the league and officially dethroned the Nimrods, who had won five league titles in a row.

E-TC's tough defense arrived on time, as the Panthers allowed just two first-quarter points. The offense came a little later, as the Panthers needed a 12-5 advantage in the second quarter to take a 19-7 lead into halftime but were never seriously challenged down the stretch.

E-TC got 15 points from Zoey McGeshick and nine from Sam Robl.

Watersmeet (7-13, 4-2) was led offensively by eight points from Frannie Zelinski.

E-TC's next assignment is a tough one: the Panthers play at Crystal Falls against the Forest Park Lady Trojans in a Class D district semifinal.
