HOUGHTON - Despite losing in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, both Michigan Tech basketball teams landed comfortably in the field of 64 for the Division II NCAA Tournament to begin this weekend.
The Tech men earned their first NCAA berth since 2004 and will play Saturday as the fourth seed in the eight-team Midwest Regional at Drury University in Springfield, Mo. Tip-off time is 9:30 p.m. EDT.
Tech's opponent is a familiar one, Wisconsin-Parkside. The Huskies and Rangers, both currently 20-8 on the season, met Dec. 29 in Wisconsin. The Huskies won 69-51, shooting 52 percent from the floor and getting 26 points from Ali Haidar.
The Tech women will turn around and head for the same gym in which they played last weekend, in Ashland, Ohio.
The Huskies (20-8), seeded fourth just like the men, will face Kentucky Wesleyan in a regional quarterfinal Friday at 8:30 p.m.
