Donald Charles Coon

HANCOCK - Donald Charles Coon, 82, a former local business owner from Hancock, died on Monday, Mar. 11, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital.

He was born in Hancock on July 13, 1930, to the late Charles and Ethel (Tucker) Coon. He attended local schools and grew up in Hancock.

Don served in the U.S. Navy in 1951.

He met his wife, Marlene Austin, and they married Feb. 4, 1954.

He worked at the Copper Country Dairy before he went on to own Coon's Auto Repair in Hancock, which later relocated to where it is now in Houghton. He owned and worked there until he retired at the age of 80.

While Don's passion was working on cars, he also loved gardening and canning his own jams and jellies. He was especially proud of his peach trees which he grew in his backyard.

He was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock.

Besides his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene Coon; a daughter, Susan Coon; a son, James Coon; a brother-in-law, Walter Erickson; a sister, Janet Eddleman.

He is survived by his children, Donald Thomas Coon, Ellen (Mark) Kemppainen, Edward (Marianne) Coon, Mark (Kristina) Coon and John Austin; siblings, Barbara (Addison) Finch, Blanche Erickson, Frank (Idella) Coon, Dorothy (Bruce) Carle, Charlote (Bob) Olive, Paul Coon, Ralph Coon, Ethel Fay (Jim) Carter, Donna (Terry) Whiteshall, Virginia (Kelly) Pinten, Howard (Sharon) Coon, David Coon, Shirley (Jake) Skewes; a brother-in-law, Dean Eddleman; grandchildren, Tommy Joe Coon, Sam Coon, Jack Coon, Donald Coon, Jesse Kneebone, Joleen Kneebone, Meagan Kemppainen, Angela Coon, Eric Coon, Brian Alkire, Kelsey Coon, Julia Coon, Krista Coon, Ashley Coon, Lee Anne Larson and John Austin; great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Mar. 15, 2013, in the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock with Rev. Fr. Brian Gerber as celebrant. Spring burial will be in the family lot in Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock. Friends may call at the church for an hour before the Mass.
