Elmer A. Johnson
LAURIUM - Elmer A. Johnson, 89, of Laurium, died Thursday, April 4, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.
He was born in Mass City on September 18, 1923, son of Victor and Hulda (Aho) Johnson.
The family moved to Houghton when he was 3. He attended the local schools, graduating from Houghton High School in 1941.
Elmer was a veteran of WWII having served with the Navy.
He was united in marriage to Verna Lantto on August 2, 1947, and the couple resided in Laurium.
Elmer first worked for Peninsula Gas Co. as a welder, then Calumet & Hecla until their closing in 1968. Then he went to work with Northern Niemala Construction as a carpenter and lastly at Anderson Jarvi until retiring in 1987.
He enjoyed spending the summers at the Chassell cottage and was an avid outdoorsman. In particular he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening. Elmer also enjoyed wintering in Avon Park, Fla. with Verna where he was a member of a competitive traveling horseshoe team.
He was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his son, Gary in 1980; sisters, Eleanor Merriman, infant sisters, Vivian and Irene; son in law, Jon Wesa
Surviving are his wife, Verna of Houghton; children, Phyllis (Wil) Limanen of Laurium, Douglas (Marjorie) of Fenton, Dennis (Marlene) of Howell, Dan (Denise) of Chassell, Janet (Rick) Curtis of Laurium, Paul (Peggy) of Laurium; 39 grandchildren; 61 great grandchildren; several step grandchildren; brother, Edsel Johnson of Hancock; daughter-in-law, Diane (Karl) Benda of Calumet; several sisters- and brothers-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service for Mr. Johnson will be held 11 a.m. Monday, at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church on M-203 in Calumet with Pastor Richard Eskola officiating. Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. Visitation will be on Sunday, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 pm also in the church.
