Dompier Dome-inant

Lakes girls team posts second-place finish indoors

April 19, 2013
By John Vrancic - For the Gazette , The Daily Mining Gazette

MARQUETTE - It was a dark, dreary and rainy day in Marquette Thursday, but Chassell senior Jamie Dompier shined brightly inside Northern Michigan University's Superior Dome.

Dompier dominated the girls' 100 and 200-meter dashes in 12.85 and 27.34 seconds, respectively, and added a first in the 400 (1:04.16) during the Division 3 Dome Invitational.

Superior Central junior Teslyn Tyner was runner-up in 100 and 200 at 13.37 and 28.62.

Dompier also had an apparent victory nullified in the first of 14 heats in the 200 due to a timing malfunction.

"The watch didn't start the first time, which was a bummer," said Dompier, noting everybody was about a second slower the second time around. "But those things happen. Having that many heats in between helped, although I still felt a little tired when we ran the second time. We hadn't been outside much this year (due to poor weather conditions), which also didn't help. I didn't have my best time in the 100, but you have to start from somewhere every year. My goal was to stay under 13."

Brimley was crowned team champion with 77 points, followed by Lake Linden-Hubbell (50), Pickford (42) and Dollar Bay (41).

Lake Linden grabbed three places in pole vault, led by Sarah Audette who took third at 7 feet, 9 inches. The Lakes also took third in the 800 and 3200 relays.

"Overall, I'm happy with what we did," said Lakes' coach Gary Guisfredi. "Taking three places in pole vault helped. Our relay teams placed and our distance kids did well. We're just happy to be here."

Dollar Bay, led by freshman Carli Daavettila, showed its strength in the distances.

Daavettila won the 1600 (6:14.63), followed by her sister Julia Daavettila (6:15.31), who's a junior. She added a second in the 3200 (13:33.96) and helped the Bays take fourth in the 3200 relay. Cami Daavettila was third in the open 3200 (14:20.22).

In the 3200 run, Carli led most of the way, but was overtaken by Brimley's Emily Chartrand in the final 25 yards.

"Winning the 1600 was a confidence boost," said Carli. "My sister was right behind me all the time and in the last lap she told me to start sprinting. The 3200 was pretty hard. I was out of breath in the last lap. I tried to give it everything I had, but she (Chartrand) had more left and got around me."

Rapid River captured the boys' title with 74 points, followed by Pickford (60) and Lake Linden (49).

Cody Kumpula, who helped the Lakes place second in the 800 relay, was runner-up in the 200 (24.8) and fourth in the 100 (11.93).

Chassell's Ross Michaels won the 100 (11.85) and pole vault (12-4).
