L'ANSE - Recent infrastructure improvements in the Village of L'Anse have had a particularly noticeable impact during the unusually winter-like spring weather conditions.
Village Water and Wastewater Superintendent Greg Fish told Village Manager Bob LaFave the old sewer system wouldn't have been able to handle the weather.
"He was pretty sure without that (new sewer system) that we would have lost control of lift station No. 1, which handles about half the flow of the village," LaFave said in a phone interview this morning regarding the village council's regular meeting Monday night.
As is, the lift station is "only" at 91 percent capacity, according to LaFave, but several issues have been averted through the new system.
"The staff is really excited about the work being done," LaFave said.
Council Trustee Chris Miller thanked the staff for its work integrating with the new village infrastructure.
During Monday's meeting, the council also took additional steps with its water project. It approved a $15,179.87 payment, through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development program, to U.P. Engineers and Architects for additional engineering costs associated with adding work to the project.
"Our hope is that once the snow melts, we have some extra work for the contractor (Danielson Construction) to do. Once the weather cooperates we plan to have them replace some valves and hydrants."
In other business at Monday's meeting, the council:
approved a $500 donation request to support the Baraga County Lake Trout Festival. The funding will come from the village's WPPI Funds, and it matches the level of support from previous years.
voted to offer support for the Baraga County FinnFest planning group, but because no specific amount was requested, the council isn't sure what the support will entail. In-kind work is a possibility.
approved the Village of L'Anse Fire Department to have a street dance on June 8 in conjunction with the Lake Trout Festival. It will involve blocking off a portion of Main Street in front of the fire hall.
