Warm-up means mud on the move

Warm temperatures and fast-melting snow led to a pair of mudslides Sunday in Houghton. A small mud slide left a few feet of mud against the back of the Dollar Tree building, but there was no significant damage and the store maintained its regular business hours. Local store officials could not comment and corporate officials could not be reached by press time. A fence at the adjacent Houghton Powersports was also damaged in a larger mudslide, but the business is closed Sunday and Monday and a phone message was unreturned. Houghton Police and Fire departments were at the scene, but did not have any additional information this morning.
Melting snow has also led the National Weather Service to issue River Flood Warnings for the Sturgeon River near Alston until Thursday evening, and a River Flood Watch for the Trap Rock River near Lake Linden from this evening to Wednesday morning.
