Verna E. Johnson

LAURIUM - Verna E. Johnson, 85, formerly of Laurium, died Friday May 10, 2013, at the Omega House in Houghton.

She was born in Mason on March 5, 1928, a daughter of Charles and Ulriika (Tuovila) Lantto. She attended Dollar Bay schools, graduating in 1947.

Verna married Elmer Johnson on Aug. 2, 1947. They made their home in Laurium where they raised seven children. Elmer preceded her in death on April 4, 2013. They had been married for 65 years.

Verna worked for Theresa's Pasties for several years. She then was employed by J.C. Penney's for 19 years, retiring in 1987.

She enjoyed baking and spending time with her friends and family. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; parents; her son, Gary; son-in-law, Jon Wesa; brothers, Charles & Arvid Lantto, sisters, Edla Taurianen, Lillian Peterson, and Martha Taurianen.

She is survived by four sons, Douglas (Marjorie) of Fenton, Mich., Dennis (Marlene) of Howell, Mich., Dan (Denise) of Chassell, and Paul (Peggy) of Laurium; two daughters, Phyllis (Wil) Limanen and Janet (Rick) Curtis both of Laurium; sisters, Selma Karjala, Junetta Ranta, Ruth Lampinen, Ida Lukkarila, Anna Knuuttila, and Evelyn (Glenn) Chapman; 40 grandchildren; 61 great grandchildren; Several step-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Funeral Service for Verna Johnson will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 13 in the First Apostolic Lutheran Church, M-203 Calumet with Pastor Richard Eskola to officiate.

Friends may call at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church on Sunday, May 12 from 4-8 p.m.

Burial for both Elmer and Verna Johnson will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton on Monday following the funeral luncheon.

The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
