EBEN JUNCTION - The Houghton softball team pulled out a split in a road doubleheader at Superior Central Monday, defeating the Cougars 8-1 after losing the first game of the day 4-1.
In game two, Houghton played clean defense behind freshman pitcher Colleen Toorongian.
'We had something to prove in the second game and the girls stepped up and made the play when the ball was hit to them,' Houghton coach Melissa Grego said.
Toorongian struck out four and scattered six walks.
Offensively, seniors Jill Toorongian and Jill Keskimaki led the way with three hits apiece, Toorongian recording two doubles and a single and Keskimaki a double and two singles.
In the opener, Houghton pitcher Laura Ruohonen struck out five and drove in the Gremlins' only run but didn't get enough help to earn the victory.
Bekah Goodreau walked and scored from Ruohonen's hit to make it 2-1 in the third before Superior Central tacked on two more runs in the sixth.
Houghton is scheduled for a doubleheader at Ironwood today.
