Literalism a crying shame

May 16, 2013
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the Editor:

The writer complains about the "ignorance" of proponents of an earth that is 6,000 years old, which he finds "embarrassing"-then prattles on about Adam and Eve "eating of the evil tree," except a millenium or two earlier. What's embarrassing is that in the United States of America in the 21st century there are still so many people who insist on the literal truth of this Bronze-Age twaddle at all. The rest of the civilized world is laughing at us, friends-and rightly so.

All those hundreds of millions of years of evolution, civilization, and science- culminating in the modern American biblical literalist. What a crying waste.
