LL-H girls qualify 17

FELCH - The Lake Linden-Hubbell girls notched a distant second to Forest Park in a Division 3 track and field regional Thursday at James D. Priestap Memorial Field. Their male classmates were third behind host North Dickinson and the Trojans.

The LL-H girls totaled 42 points to Forest Park's 73, but still qualified 17 entries for U.P. Finals in Kingsford June 1, including runner-up spots in all four relays. The Dollar Bay girls were third with 23 points, and Chassell was fourth with 20.

The top four in each individual event and top two relays qualify for the Finals in Division 3.

The Lakes had several individual honors. Freshman Carli Ongie was the only LL-H winner on the track, prevailing in a close three-way decision with Chassell's Tawna Ryynanen and LL-H classmate Clara Knight in the 800. Sarah Audette won the pole vault with an 8-0 clear and was one of three LL-H qualifiers in the event.

The Bays opened the day with a victory in the 3,200-meter relay as Taylor Busser and Carli, Cami and Julia Daavettila finished in 11 minutes, 7.45 seconds.

Carli Daavettila rolled to the win in the individual 3,200 with a 13:35.64. Six of the Bays' eight entries are to Finals are in distance running events.

The individual star of the day was Chassell sprinter Jamie Dompier. The senior qualified easily to defend her two U.P. championships, blistering the 100 field with a 12.45 and winning the 200 as well in 26.21. She also dominated the 400 to win by five seconds in 1:02.33.

She, Ryynanen and Julia Pietila (third in the 3,200) will represent the Panthers.

On the boys' side, North Dickinson won with 66 points behind a 4-for-4 day from hurdler/sprinter Tim Hruska. Forest Park was second with 52, followed by LL-H (47), Dollar Bay (17) and Chassell (three).

The Lakes were strongest in field events, taking first place in three. James Marietta cleared 12 feet to win the pole vault, with teammates taking two of the other three qualifying positions. Cody Kumpula leapt 18-9 to win long jump, while Charles Heckel's 127-7 effort topped discus. Alex Knight notched a Lakes victory on the track, pulling away for the 800 in 2:12.87. The Lakes also won the 800 relay.

LL-H will have two relays and 14 individual entries at the Finals.

Dollar Bay's biggest highlight was the 3,200, where Brett Houle won by more than half a minute in 11:19.7 and the Bays swept all four qualifying positions with Tom Autio, Damon Boyd and Carl Kangas. DB's other points came from the 1,600 where Houle and Autio went 2-3.

Chassell's lone rep will be Ross Michaels, who made the cut with fourth-place finishes in both long jump and the 100.
