HOUGHTON - Houghton won a pair of thrillers over Kingsford on its home diamond in prep softball Thursday.
In the opener, Houghton gave up a run in the first inning but got the walk-off win despite having only two runners in the first six innings.
Junior Laura Ruohonen led off with a single, senior Jill Keskimaki singled to right and advanced to second base on the throw, putting both runners in scoring position for senior Jill Toorongian to drive them in on her single to right field.
Ruohonen took the win, striking out 12.
In the second game, the teams went to extra innings tied at 1. Anna Gaffney drew a leadoff walk to start the eighth inning, advanced to third on a Ruohonen single and scored the winning run on Keskimaki's bloop single.
"I was really pleased at how our upperclassman came through with some big hits at the end of both games. Everybody came together defensively, and we were able to get the outs when we needed them," Houghton coach Melissa Grego said.
Houghton is now 6-6 on the season.
