Justus Mattila plants a flag on the grave of a military veteran Saturday at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton, as his mother, Casandra, and brother, Malaki, look on. The family was representing the Keweenaw Detachment of the Marine Corps League, who sponsored the placing on the flags for Armed Forces Day. Also taking part were members of Upward Bound at Finlandia University, U.P. Kids, the Hancock Public Schools Junior ROTC, Michigan Technological University Veterans Club and local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. There were 1,311 flags placed on graves.
