John A. Harma

ATLANTIC MINE - John A. Harma, 93, a former Atlantic Mine resident, died on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.

He was born in Atlantic Mine, on July 15, 1919, a son of the late John F. and Hannah (Benfort) Harma. He attended the Onnela School and later served in the CC Camp.

On December 31, 1942, he married the former Helen M. Ranta in Detroit.

While living in Detroit, John worked at Massey Ferguson Tractor and as a mechanic and machinist at Ford and at Vickers as well as various machine shops.

In 1971, the couple returned to the area, making their home in Atlantic Mine.

John was employed locally at Formatics in Ripley and retired from the Copper Range Co. where he worked in the Machine Shop.

John was a longtime member of the Atlantic Mine Apostolic Lutheran Church, where he served as a board member. He was also the president of Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Oskar.

John loved spending time on his farm and traveling to Texas with his wife, Helen, to spend the winters. He also enjoyed fixing tractors, motorcycles and cars.

Surviving are three sons, James (Judy) of Redford, Mich., David, a patient at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility and Fred of Atlantic Mine; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Maria (Norman) Durham; a daughter-in-law, Melissa "Missy" Harma of Dollar Bay; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, John was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 2004; a daughter, Delores Johnson; a son, Jerry Harma; a brother, Ray; five sisters, Eva, Alice, Agnes, Elma and Leah.

John's family is very appreciative to the staff at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility and thanks them for the wonderful care given to him.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 31, 2013, in the Atlantic Mine Apostolic Lutheran Church with Pastor Elmer Liimatta to officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday in the church. Burial will be in the Atlantic Mine Cemetery.
