Houghton softball denied in nailbiter

June 3, 2013
The Daily Mining Gazette

GLADSTONE - Houghton pushed Negaunee to the brink in their Division 3 softball semifinal but never got the breakthrough it needed, losing 1-0 to end its season.

Nicole Richer drove in Ashley Anderson for a Negaunee run in the first inning, but Gremlin pitcher Laura Ruohonen stopped Negaunee from there.

Ruohonen scattered five hits and three walks and struck out eight.

She also had Houghton's only hit, a double.

Adena Anderson had the shutout for the Miners, striking out 14, but her five walks ensured the Gremlins had traffic on the basepaths most of the game.

Negaunee went on to lose 4-0 to Gladstone in the district final.
