HOUGHTON - Following the recent announcement that two key Michigan Technological University administrators will be leaving, Tech will undergo a significant organizational realignment.
With the university's $200 million Generations of Discovery campaign wrapping up and Vice President for Advancement Shea McGrew heading to Bowling Green State University, Tech President Glenn Mroz announced this morning the Office of Advancement will merge with Student Affairs. The change is effective immediately, and Student Affairs will become Student Affairs and Advancement, under the leadership of Vice President Les Cook.
"It encompasses the full spectrum of recruiting students, retaining them and investing in their success, to their transition to alumni, and finally as donors and friends of the university," Mroz said in a release this morning.
Discussions between administrators and deans will take place throughout the summer about how to better meet the philanthropic needs of each academic area.
"This move provides a great opportunity for us to capitalize on the strong competent staff in Student Affairs and builds on the strengths of a campaign-hardened team in Advancement to sustain the funding needed to ensure our students are prepared to create the future that our world demands," Cook said in a Daily Mining Gazette interview this morning. "... My position is highly dependent on working with people at all levels of the university, as well as external constituencies. At the end of the day, it all comes down to building relationships - this is essential in fundraising and development work. I am ready for these new opportunities and look forward to the challenge."
Additionally, with Tech Chief Financial Officer Dan Greenlee recently announcing he will retire in June 2014, all financial services and operations currently under his watch will report to Vice President of Research Dave Reed, effective immediately.
"We have a great opportunity for a seamless transition with Dan working with us through the coming year," Mroz said.
Reed is already involved in budget management and strategic planning through his work in research.
"I have been responsible for institutional budget and planning for several years, the budget office reports to me, institutional analysis does also, and I have worked closely with both Dan and folks in his organization for a long time," Reed said in a Gazette interview today. "There are excellent people in the group now reporting to me, and I am looking forward to working even more closely with them."
Greenlee will remain as CFO and treasurer of the Board of Control until his retirement, including having primary responsibility for investment management, cash management and bonding, and he will also work on long-term financial planning projects.
"I look forward to the transition, while continuing the stability and consistency of our financial recording and reporting systems," Greenlee said in a recent Gazette interview. "We will make it a smooth and seamless 'passing of the baton.'"
