Jim’s Pizza & Family Restaurant Calumet holding Vietnam Moving Wall Fundraiser

June 5, 2013
The Daily Mining Gazette

CALUMET - Jim's Pizza & Family Restaurant in Calumet is a long-standing Copper Country institution. Calumet's longest operating family-owned restaurant, Jim's is owned and operated by Jim and Lana Hughes and has been open for going on 36 years. In addition to providing the casual dining atmosphere and affordable food that draws many customers to the restaurant, Jim's Pizza & Family Restaurant makes an effort to give back to the community.

"We try to do one major fundraiser every year to raise funds for (an organization)" said Jim.

In past years, Jim has used the sale of soda to generate funds for different organizations - a model he will be following during this month's fundraiser as well.

Jim’s Pizza & Family Restaurant in Calumet will hold Vietnam Moving Wall Fundraiser.

"We're running a fundraiser for a month and what it involves is if you buy any type of soda pop we will donate fifty cents to the cause," he said. "The last time I did this it added up to quite a bit of money."

This year the money will be donated to help bring the Vietnam Moving Wall to the area. The wall is a three-fifths size replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. It contains names of military members who died in the Vietnam War, including 5 Calumet High School graduates, 15 Houghton County residents and one Keweenaw County resident.

In order to secure a date to show the wall, there needs to be a $2,500 deposit. The ROTC, American Legion Post 61 and VFW Post 3900 are coordinating fundraising and hope to raise the money and secure a date during the summer of 2014. During a May interview with the Daily Mining Gazette, Maj. Mike Farley of the Calumet High School Junior ROTC said prospective sites for the moving wall include the Legion Field in the Calumet Industrial Park and the C-L-K practice football field.

While always looking to support a good cause in his yearly fundraising efforts, the Vietnam Moving Wall holds special significance for Jim.

"Jim was drafted into the army from 1965 to 1967 serving in the medical field," said Lana. "A lot of people aren't even aware of that."

To support the efforts to bring the Vietnam Moving Wall to the Copper Country, visit Jim's Pizza & Family Restaurant, located on Sixth Street across from the post office, for a soda. You can even stay to enjoy food from their extensive menu featuring home-style dinners, made-from-scratch pizzas, soups, sandwiches, appetizers and more. Jim's Pizza & Family Restaurant is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with delivery starting at 4 p.m. until close. Call 906-337-4440 for delivery or questions.
