GRAND RAPIDS - Marie Catrib most recently owned a Grand Rapids restaurant bearing her name, but the beloved restaurateur, who passed away from a battle with ovarian cancer at age 65 Wednesday, is known by many in the Keweenaw for her time running Marie's Deli in downtown Houghton.
The native of Lebanon opened the Houghton restaurant at 518 Shelden Avenue in 1985, bringing food from her home country to the Copper Country for 15 years.
Before that, she briefly owned a grocery store in L'Anse, and she eventually opened a restaurant in Marquette as well. She sold Marie's Deli in Houghton, enrolled at the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont and briefly worked in Asheville, N.C. and Green Bay, Wis., where she gained national recognition as a pastry chef.
Finally, at the urging of her son Fouad, she opened Marie Catrib's in Grand Rapids in 2005.
According to reports from family members, because she was such a private person, there will be no funeral services for Catrib.
