Helen Phoebe Hughes

HOUGHTON - Helen Phoebe Hughes, 91, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility where she was a resident for the past four years.

She was born Helen Phoebe Ostertag in St. Louis, Kan., on April 7, 1922. Her mother died while giving birth so she was raised by her grandparents.

After graduating in 1940 she enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp where she served as a Corporal. It was there she met the love of her life, Clarence Hughes. They were stationed in Honshu, Japan; Fort Benning, Georgia, and Germany before they made their permanent residence at Mine Street in Calumet.

She was an avid golfer and strong supporter of the Calumet Golf Course where she won the women's handicap many times. Helen traveled extensively, loved playing bridge, flower arranging and entertaining with fine dining at her home. She loved dogs and always had a Yorkie by her side.

She was preceded in death by her son, David Hughes.

Helen is survived by four children: Mark (Linda) Hughes of Laurium, Paul (Jody) Hughes of Chassell, Sharon (Missy) Murray of Vancouver, Canada and Kathy (Chuck) Winscot of Ishpeming; eight grandchildren, Mark, Kristina, Laura, Jacqueline, Madeline, Rob, Leanne and Jeff; five great grandchildren, Maya, Jack Lily, Abbie, and Ella.

Helen was loved by many and had a graciousness and love for those around her. She will be sadly missed as a loving mom, a wonderful grandmother and great grandmother.

A funeral service will be conducted by the Keweenaw Marine Corps League 1016 at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 29th in the Ryan Funeral Home in Calumet.
