CALUMET?- Coca-Cola defeated REL, Inc., 9-4 to win the local Senior Little League championship Monday at Wolverine Field.
The regular season champions, representing Portage Lake Little League, got two hits apiece from Jonathan Bostwick, Brad Juntunen and Lee Markham. Juntunen was the winning pitcher in relief of Jared Peryam, who went on to make several key defensive plays after moving out to left field.
Owen Kariniemi took the loss for REL.
Lakes Dairyland prevailed 13-11 over Jan Bruin-Slot Builders in a back-and-forth contest for the Keweenaw Little League Senior softball title Saturday.
After both teams scored four times in the first inning, pitchers Emily Erkkila (Jan Bruin-Slot Builders)?and Sarah Audette (Lakes Dairyland) settled in to slow the scoring pace.
Dairyland carried a four-run lead into the final inning and escaped after Megan Yeo of Jan Bruin-Slot Builders, with two runs already in, lined out to shortstop with the bases loaded.
Erin Gast had three hits for the winners, while Audette, Abby Sutherland, Morgan Peters and Peyton Gast each had two. Selena Stromer and Celia Peterson had two-hit games in defeat.
In the KLL?Major title game Saturday, Kayley King went the distance in the pitching circle for Calumet Machine, which held off Lions 10-9.
Tied at 5 going to the sixth inning, Calumet Machine scored five runs on five hits and walk, then weathered a storm of four runs on two doubles, a triple and a single in the bottom of the inning.
Brittany Heikkila had two doubles and a single for the champs. Madison?Rajala and Amelia Klemett added two hits apiece.
For the Lions, Autumn Labonte posted three hits and scored three times and both Celia Kiilunen and Vera Peterson had two-hit games.
