By Gazette Staff , The Daily Mining Gazette

WAKEFIELD - A woman in Wakefield was arrested Monday night after she barricaded herself in her home threatening suicide while armed.

State police at the Wakefield Post report the incident began after they responded to a traffic crash at the intersection of Pummala Road and Colberg Road in Wakefield Township. During the course of the investigation of the crash, troopers made contact with the owner of the vehicle at a residence in Wakefield Township.

Upon arrival at the home troopers were told by the owner's adult son that she was threatening suicide, was in possession of both a rifle and shotgun and had barricaded the door.

Troopers were able to make contact with the 46-year-old woman through an open window and attempted to convince her to let them help her.

The woman repeatedly said she wanted police to kill her and that she would not come out alive. Police were informed there was a male friend in the home with the woman. Troopers were able to get the man to exit the residence with the rifle.

Police continued to speak with the woman with no positive results. During the course of their discussions police detected the odor of natural gas.

Police surmised she had opened all burners on a stove.

At that time police made the decision to enter the residence. Upon entering they found the woman to be in possession of a shotgun and she had indeed opened the burners of the stove.

Troopers said the woman was highly intoxicated.

She was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm while intoxicated. She was lodged in the Gogebic County Jail. Her name was not released pending arraignment which is expected to be sometime today.

Additional charges and possible charges against the woman's male friend may come following a review by the prosecutor's office. Troopers were assisted by the Gogebic County Sheriff's Department.
