MARQUETTE - Portage Lake marched to within six innings of the championship game of the District 11 Minor (age 9-10) Little League tournament Monday with an 11-1 victory over Keweenaw.
Mason Mikesch had the best day. Not only did he pitch 3 1/3 innings of one-hit ball for the win, he also led his team offensively by going 3-for-3 with a double and scoring three runs.
Emmett Larson, Colin Cowell and Austin Salani all had two hits for PL, which plays Negaunee Wednesday at 5:30 p.m..
In the first inning, Davin Hill, Tanner Larson, Mikesch and Salani had singles, leading to three runs, while hits from Emmett Larson, Mikesch and Cowell led two two more runs in the third.
Keweenaw pulled one back in the next inning when Dean Loukus singled and came around to score on a throwing error, but PL put it away in the bottom of the fourth thanks to three straight two-out doubles to the gap by Mikesch, Cowell and Eli Larson. PL added three more runs in the fifth to end the contest.
Loukus had two of Keweenaw's three hits, with the other going to Tom Voelker.
Keweenaw plays Marquette today at 3:30 in an elimination game, while Portage Lake 2 and Baraga County meet afterward.
Baraga lost 11-1 to Negaunee in five innings Monday.
PL2 survived Sunday thanks to a 12-6 win over Penokee Range. Trailed 5-4 after four innings, PL2 rallied for seven runs in the fifth.
Ethan Jarvela and Brady Schmierer had two hits apiece while Dylan Horning tripled.
