MISERY BAY - Jon Francis Virtanen, 48, of Misery Bay, passed away unexpectedly on July 7, 2013.
Jon was born on Oct. 5, 1964, in Hancock, to Francis Virtanen and Frances Wiideman of Misery Bay. He attended the Heikkinen School in Toivola and graduated from Jeffers High School in Painesdale in 1982.
At the age of 19, Jon donated a kidney to his brother, Edward.
Jon attended Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, earning an Associate's degree in Business and his pilot's license. He owned and operated Finnish Painting and Restoration in Traverse City and Misery Bay.
Jon married Tammy Nelson in an airplane over the U.P. in 1994.
For the last several years, Jon has brought smiles to the faces of both patrons and co-workers as well as his girlfriend, Valerie Sarau, at the Mosquito Inn in Toivola. He was an avid snowmobile and 4-wheeler enthusiast.
Surviving Jon are his daughter, Natasha Virtanen; grandson, Kayden; and granddaughter, Brooklyn of Traverse City; his mother, Frances Wiideman of Misery Bay; brothers and sisters, Gene R. (Amber) Virtanen of Arkansas, Beth L. Virtanen (Vernon Warren) of Arkansas and L'Anse, Lynn D. Virtanen of Duluth, Edward J. Virtanen of Trimountain, Ann Virtanen (Gilbert Gallegos) of South Range, Emily Virtanen (Roger Wood) of Painesdale, Joyce Virtanen (Irving Riutta) of North Dakota; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Jon was preceded in death by his father, Francis Virtanen.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2013, in the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, with Fr. John Martignon to officiate.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday. Interment will be in the Toivola Cemetery, followed by a fellowship and lunch at the Toivola Firehall recreation center on Church Rd. Arrangements are being handled by Antila Funeral Service, Inc.
