HANCOCK - Hancock police recovered the body of a 33-year-old Hancock man in the Portage Lake Canal Tuesday night.

The body of Jason Mikkola was recovered on the Hancock side of the canal about 6:30 p.m. Officers who are members of a local dive team recovered the body about 20 yards in front of a family-owned boathouse.

"We presume he had fallen while mooring his boat at the boathouse," said Hancock Police Chief Mike Beaudoin.

Mikkola had last been seen about 1 a.m. Monday.

Beaudoin said he is waiting for a report from the Houghton County medical examiner. Although the investigation continues, Beaudoin said no foul play is suspected.

Hancock police were assisted by the Houghton County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Coast Guard.
