Dial Help’s Big Truck Day to be held this Saturday

HOUGHTON - Whether they move on tracks, trails or highways, there's a good chance someone's favorite vehicle will be featured at Dial Help's Big Truck Day Saturday.

The fifth annual event for families will be held at the front parking lot of the Copper Country Mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dial Help Executive Director Rebecca Crane said there would be a number of vehicles, including fire trucks, police vehicles, snowplows and a Moyle Racing truck. Houghton PowerSports will also be on hand to give rides in four-wheelers.

"That's the first time we're actually going to be giving kids rides," Crane said.

McGruff the Crime Dog and Michigan Technological University mascot Blizzard T. Husky will also be present. There will also be food, prizes, activities such as coloring and face painting and more games than previous years, such as Plinko.

There is a suggested donation of $5 per child, but adults are free.

All money raised goes to fund Dial Help programs and services, Crane said. The Houghton-based organization provides services such as crisis intervention, substance abuse treatment, victim services and family support services.

"From years past, we've found that children of all ages really enjoy being able to see and sit in the vehicles and talk to the firefighters and ambulance drivers, the people who use these trucks every day for their living," she said. "There's plenty of other things to do and it's fun for the whole family."

The proceeds are especially useful this year, Crane said, as Dial Help has returned to 24-hour operation for the first time since 2008.

"It's a chance to families to have fun together and support a good cause," she said.
