MESA, Ariz. - Sandra Fay "Sandy" (Nuranen) Ruscio, daughter of the late John Jacob and Elizabeth Ann "Bessie" Nuranen of Hancock, and granddaughter of Konrad and Saara Niiranen, pioneer Finnish immigrants to Hancock, passed away on June 4, 2013, in Mesa, Arizona from complications following surgery at Banner Baywood Medical Center.

In 1964, she married Amir Levi Ruscio in the Franklin Street Apostolic Lutheran Church in Hancock. Sandy and Amir were blessed with the birth of two sons, Lawrence and Jason. Lawrence died in 1988 following a tragic automobile accident. Jason (Petra Wright) resides in Los Angeles.

She was preceded in death by siblings, James, Michael, Fred, John, Paul, Calvin, Rose Laitinen and Joyce Nakkula.

Surviving are, Sara (John) Wilcox of Apache Junction, Ariz., Ruth Kangas and Gloria Jerabek of Hancock, David of Hancock, and Robert "Bert" of Mission Hills, Calif.; also, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sandy graduated with honors from Hancock Central High School, where, as a majorette, she delighted fans at parades and sporting events with her skillful use of the baton. After high school, Sandy found employment in Los Angeles.

Throughout her life, she pursued studies at various schools, including Finlandia University, and traveled extensively, believing travel was the road to a superior education.

True to her beliefs, she ushered in the year 2000 touring the pyramids at Giza on New Year's Day.

When her husband Amir resigned from the Central Intelligence Agency, the Ruscio family moved to Hancock, and purchased the Homestead Bar in Calumet Township. Sandy kept her doors open to people of all walks of life. She had a gift for listening and a heart for caring.

A memorial service for Sandy will be held in the Memorial Chapel in Hancock on Saturday, August 3rd, with Rev. DJ Rasner officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service which is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Interment will be in the Lakeside Cemetery, Hancock.
