Hancock Legion ends up fourth in state tourney

ADRIAN - The Hancock Post 186 American Legion baseball team grabbed a win over the weekend at the state tournament but ended up in fourth place of six teams.

Hancock defeated Ida 8-1 Friday morning to advance, with Tyler LaDuron pitching a complete game four-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Hancock jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning after Dax Durocher's three-run double was followed by an RBI single from Beau Dupuis.

Mike Saari tripled in a run in the second, and LaDuron singled one in during the fourth.

Brady Turner and Alex VanWagner delivered RBI hits in the fifth for insurance runs.

However, the end of the season came at the hands of the Gladstone Indians yet again, this time by a 5-0 tally.

"Gladstone has been our nemesis all season and for some reason we can never get anything going against them. Although we did defeat them in the Newberry tournament that we won and once at their place, we were just 2-6 overall against them this year," Hancock manager Nels Paul said.

Saari had two of Hancock's four hits, while the others came from Cole Jepsen and Gabe Rupright.

Gladstone only had six hits off the tandem of Saari and LaDuron.

Gladstone went on to lose its next game on a no-hitter to rival Escanaba and exit the tournament in third, while Esky lost the title game to Hudson.

Hancock finished the season with an overall record of 17-18.
