LAURIUM - Thomas E. Rowe, 85, a resident of Calumet Street in Laurium passed away on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born on April 26, 1928, in Calumet, a son of the late Thomas and Alma (Olson) Rowe and grew up in Albion Location. He attended the Calumet Schools and was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during WW II.
On Oct. 11, 1952, he was married to Joan M. Larson in Calumet and she preceded him in death on June 24, 1990. He later married Evelyn Richards Waarala of Green Bay and she preceded him in death in September of 2000. His son-in-law, Dan Strzyzykowski, also preceded him in death.
Tom worked for the local mining companies, C&H and Universal Oil, and in 1989 retired as mining captain of the Homestake Mining Company in Centennial. He was honored to be selected for a unique audio interpretation of the role that mining played in his life that is featured at the Keweenaw National Historical Park's Visitor Center in Calumet.
Tom was always willing to help anyone who needed help. He was indeed a jack of all trades and was a much needed and loved handyman for his daughters. Although retired, he worked effortlessly and endlessly to help others, and did so without expecting anything in return. His guide in life was the following: "I shall pass through this world but once. If there be any kindness I can show or any good that I can do, let me do it now for I shall not pass this way again."
He was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Calumet.
Surviving are daughters, Gale Strzyzykowski of Calumet, Ann (Martin) Miller of Calumet and Vicki (Mark) Kivela of Lake Linden; five grandchildren, Kelly (Jeff) Kalcich of Calumet, Mark Strzyzykowski of Phoenix, Ariz., Joan Strzyzykowski of Phoenix, Ariz., Mike (Stacy) Kivela of Rockford, Ill. and Erik Kivela of Bootjack; three great grandchildren, Max and Morgan Kivela and Johnathon "JJ" Kalcich; brother, William Rowe of Garden City, Mich.; two sisters, Dorothy Webb of Farmington Hills, Mich. and Marge Covert of Lincoln, Neb.
