Sherman J. Gauthier

SOUTH RANGE - Sherman J. Gauthier, 80, a resident of South Range, died on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock.

He was born in Donken, Mich., on June 29, 1933, a son of the late Francis and Taimi (Turala) Gauthier. He attended and graduated from the Winona School and also attended Michigan Technological University for one year.

Sherman was employed for 10 years at Copper Range Railroad. He then worked for 15 years at the White Pine Copper Mine as a mechanic and was also a medic at the mine and later was self employed in construction until retirement.

On Oct. 21, 1964, he was married to Mary Crowley Andrews at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Donken. She preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 1986.

Sherman was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving with the Signal Communication's Detachment during the Korean War. He was a life member of Ranger Post 6165 V.F.W. of South Range, serving as past post commander for four years, was a member of Alfred Erickson Post 186 American Legion of Hancock, a member of the Korean War Veteran's Assoc., life member coordinator of AmVets Post 1190, life member of the DAV Post Chapter 115, served as Chaplain for the Copper Country Veteran's Assoc., was a member of the Michigan Veteran's Trust Fund Committee and the Past Commanders Club, served as 15 District All American Commander (1996-1997) and Chaplain, served two terms as State Honor Guard, was a member of 40&8 American Legion of Iron Mountain, was a life member of the National Home and life member of Camp Trotter, and was named U.P. Veteran of the Year, 2002-2003, and for 12 years devoted his time to driving the DAV van, logging over 100,000 miles.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in South Range and the Knights of Columbus 3rd degree Council 692, and 4th degree Assembly No. 472 and was also a dedicated member of the Assembly's Color Corps.

Sherman was compassionate about serving in his community. He served as past president of the South Range Lions Club, past president of the South Range Eagles Aerie 1122, was a life member of the Range Historical Society where he served as past trustee and was a member of the Knights of the Roundtable. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Diana "Deena" and Bob Rees of Hesperia, Calif.; a brother, Jacob "Jack" (Phyllis) of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Robin (Brian) Bessey of Washington, Shelley (Doug) Orr of Texas, Steve (Jennifer) Rees of California, Rick (Krystal) Rees of California, Dale (Loretta) Andrews of Wyoming, Debbie (Mike) Garbett of Wyoming, and Darren (Mikole) Andrews of Idaho; numerous great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; two cousins, Harriett Ozanich of Mesa, Ariz. and Margaret Lindeman of Houghton; and a brother-in-law, Bob Davis of Ojai, Calif.

Besides his parents and wife, Sherman was also preceded in death by a sister, Greta Davis; and a son, Dan Andrews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at Holy Family Catholic Church in South Range, with Fr. John Martignon as celebrant. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, where a memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. by Range Post, and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at 10 a.m. on Friday in the church. Burial will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range, with full military rites conducted by Range Post and the Copper Country Veteran's Assoc. A celebration of Sherman's life will follow at the V.F.W. in South Range.

Memorials may be made to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, 527 Hancock St., Hancock, MI 49930; the Portage Health Dialysis Center, 500 Campus Dr., Hancock, MI 49930; or to the charity of one's choice in the name of Sherman J. Gauthier.
