Loretta Maxine Chapman Wisti

MASON/CHASSELL - Lorretta Maxine Chapman Wisti, 73, died August 3, 2013. She was born Feb. 16, 1940, in Bay City, Mich. to Stanley Gontko and Dorothy Billingsley.

She was legally adopted in 1947 by her stepfather William Chapman. Lorretta graduated from Alpena High School in 1958. She attended Suomi College (now Finlandia University) and went on to graduate from The College of St. Scholastica in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She earned her masters degree in Social Work from Michigan State University in 1969.

A devoted advocate for children, Lorretta worked tirelessly for many years as a school social worker in the Lansing School District.

She loved gardening, travel, and was a long time season ticket holder to Michigan State Women's Basketball. Lori was a voracious reader and a supporter of the arts and humanitarian causes. A strong woman of uncompromising ideals, she will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Michael Wisti; sisters-in-law, Irene (Aho) Wisti and Joanne (Ciaciuch) Gontko; brothers-in-law, Andrew Wisti and Bill Brown; nephew, Chip Gontko; grand-nephew, Aaron Kascha; and dear friends, Rosie Cherrette and Lillian Koykka.

She is survived by her sons, Michael William Wisti and partner, Norah Labiner and Leif (Jodi) Wisti; beloved grandchildren, Lydia and Henry Wisti; brothers, Stanley Gontko, Larry (Linda) Gontko, William Chapman, James Chapman and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at 11 a.m. in St. Anne's Catholic Church in Chassell. Burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Friday, August 16, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Chassell.

Contributions in Lorretta's memory can be Ele's Place in Lansing, Mich., Friends of the Mason Library, Mason Mich. and the Michigan Humane Society.
