EAGLE RIVER - An Eagle Harbor Township man was arraigned Wednesday on drug charges following a raid Monday that yielded several pounds of marijuana. District Court officials in Keweenaw County said 63-year old Thomas Ornelas was arraigned on three separate charges before Judge Mark Wisti.
According to the Keweenaw County Sheriff's Department, deputies acting on information from National Park Service Rangers on Isle Royale, obtained a search warrant for Ornelas' home near the Eagle Harbor Township/ Grant Township line about two miles from Copper Harbor. A search was conducted by Sheriff's Deputies along with National Park Service Rangers. The search resulted in the recovery of about 15 pounds of processed and loose marijuana, 34 plants and equipment used in what police called an extensive grow operation.
Ornelas was charged with one count of controlled substance, manufacture and delivery, a seven-year felony, controlled substance, maintaining a drug house, a two-year high court misdemeanor and weapon felony firearm charge, a two-year felony. Ornelas remains lodged in the Keweenaw County jail in Eagle River in lieu of 10 percent cash of a $10,000 bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary examination in Keweenaw County District court at 10 a.m. Aug. 29.
