Ruth M. Peltomaa

CHASSELL - Ruth M. Peltomaa, 91, a former resident of Chassell, died on Monday, August 19, 2013, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock, where she had been a patient for the past 10 years.

Ruth was born in Tapiola, on January 31, 1922, a daughter of the late Isaac and Kaisa Johanna (Petrelius) Kallungi. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from the John A. Doelle School. Ruth cared for her parents until they passed away.

On October 22, 1949, she married William "Bill" Peltomaa in Hancock. The couple was married for 50 years, living in Chassell until Bill died in January of 1999.

Ruth then moved to the Bluffs in Houghton where she resided for four years prior to moving into the nursing home.

Ruth was a member of the South Range Apostolic Lutheran Church. She had a strong faith and was very active in the church. She was also a member of the Doelle Senior Citizens Club. She will be remembered by her family as a wonderful homemaker. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening and loved music.

Surviving are five children; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Carol (Lud) Gazvoda of Chassell, their son, Rudy (Abby) Gazvoda and their children, Maggie, Max and Jackson; Gail (Mark) Johnson of Houghton and their children, Jesse (Michele) Johnson, Lindsey (Steve) Conley and their daughter, Audrina; and Jordan Johnson, Judith Peltomaa of Mozambique, Africa, David (Stacie) Peltomaa of Okemos; and their children, Parker and Payton, Lois (Chris) Raymond of Houghton; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Ruth was also preceded in death by two brothers, Herman "Ike" and Arnold Kallungi; four sisters, Eva Olson, Impi Wanhala, Fannie Kallungi and Mayme Olson; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility for the wonderful care given to their mother over the years.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2013, in the South Range Apostolic Lutheran Church, with Pastor Arvo Onermaa and Chuck Bylkas to officiate.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday in the church. Burial will be in the Chassell Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Chassell Township Public School Foundation, P.O. Box 140, Chassell, MI 49916, or the South Range Apostolic Lutheran Church in the name of Ruth M. Peltomaa.
