Adding on to DMG?article

August 22, 2013
The Daily Mining Gazette

To the editor:

I would like to provide some additional information as a follow-up to the Gazette's July 17 article about the Calumet Theatre's 3rd Grand Raffle.

Net proceeds from each of the previous Grand Raffles are not/were not "used for operations of the theater" as stated in the article. I interpret the word "operations" to mean normal everyday items. Grand Raffle proceeds are used for items that are not budgeted Theatre items things we couldn't afford without support of the public purchasing tickets. The majority of items covered by Raffle proceeds are for enhancement of our patron's theater experience. These include: upgrades to our heating and cooling system, refinishing the front doors and display window area, replacing door locking mechanisms, replacement of bathroom fixtures, upgrades to emergency lighting, installation of a new security system, repair of marble steps, guided tour enhancements, and updates to our box office ticketing system which will result in online ticket sales later this year. As the article mentions, a portion of the 2013 raffle proceeds will be used toward the elevator project. The remaining portion will be used in order of priority to take care of some of the 28 items approved at the April 23 Calumet Village council meeting.

The article mentioned the new three seven place prizes, but did not tell the "rest of the story." The three prizes are one night luxury accommodation and dinner for two at Dapple Gray Bed & Breakfast with dinner at the Harbor Haus Restaurant or at Magnuson Franklin Square Inn with dinner at the Shelden Grill or at Sand Hills Lighthouse Inn with dinner at the Fitzgerald's Restaurant. We are grateful to have these fine quality businesses partnering with the Theatre to provide extra opportunities for ticket winners to not only support the Theatre but to enjoy the Keweenaw in a special way.

The Theatre looks forward to another successful sell-out raffle - as it has in each of its two previous times; giving out $34,000 in five cash prizes to members of the community and netting $15,000 for the Theatre is the goal. For 113 years the community has supported the Calumet Theatre. The Grand Raffle provides a method for the Theatre to give back to the community and provide needed improvements to its home. With only 1,000 tickets for sale, we encourage early purchase to secure your 1 in 200 chance to win a cash prize.
