Brewing up a good time

HOUGHTON - This year's Keweenaw Brewfest will have more options than ever before.

The fourth annual Brewfest will be held 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the East Houghton Waterfront Park. The first three years have raised $50,000 for the Keweenaw Community Foundation, said organizer Mike Rose.

"It's going to be upper 70s and sunny with almost no chance of rain," he said. "It's going to be a perfect day on the waterfront. It's the fourth year in a row (with good weather), so we're pretty lucky."

A large crowd gathered for the 2011 Keweenaw Brewfest at the East Houghton Waterfront Park. The fourth annual Keweenaw Brewfest is Saturday. The three previous events have raised $50,000 for the Keweenaw Community Foundation.

Forty breweries will be serving up more than 150 varieties of beer. Fifteen new beermakers hopped on board this year, including Cheboygan Breweries and Petoskey Breweries.

Tickets are available for $30 ahead of time or $40 at the door Saturday. They can be purchased through k-c-f.org, calling 482-9673 or through tonight at the Keweenaw Brewing Company in Houghton. Rose said there were about 200 tickets left as of Thursday morning.

"They get a 6-ounce etched tasting glass and 12 wooden tokens," Rose said. "Each token buys them a taste of whatever beer they choose."

People must be 21 years old to attend. IDs are required.

There won't just be beer. Cheap Therapy will provide live music, and there will be food on hand from Carmelita's, Pilgrim River Steakhouse, Shelden Grill and Portage Health. Carmelita's and Portage Health will also meet on the field of battle for a taco cook-off.

Rose also thanked the 100 volunteers who are helping to put on the event.

"We can't do it without them," he said.
