SAULT STE. MARIE - Houghton ended up in second place Saturday at the eight-team mBank Sault Invitational.
The Gremlins dropped a close 2-1 (25-23, 13-25, 15-12) decision to Rogers City in the championship match.
Before that, Houghton went 2-1 in its morning pool, sweeping Escanaba and Rogers City, but losing 2-0 to Petoskey. This set the seeding for the final bracket, in which Houghton bounced Rudyard 2-0 (26-24, 25-20) in a close quarterfinal before taking out Brimley 2-0 (25-17, 25-15) in the semi. Rogers City defeated Petoskey in the other semifinal.
Senior Elisa Jurmu was named to the all-tournament team with 28 kills, six blocks and 42 digs.
Kenna Farrey dished out a team-best 45 assists, while Ashlyn Kero added 25 kills and 11 aces and Emma Huhta pitched in 13 kills.
Defensively, Miranda Hillstrom led the Gremlins with 48 digs.
Houghton (4-2) plays in a two-day tournament at Wisconsin-Oshkosh starting Tuesday.
