HOUGHTON - Michigan Tech announced its 2013 football captains Friday. They are offensive lineman Chris Mullen (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame), defensive lineman David Russek (Ovid, Mich./Ovid-Elsie), quarterback Tyler Scarlett (Clarkston, Mich.) and fullback Cole Welch (Kingsford, Mich.).
Mullen is a three-year veteran of the offensive line for the Huskies. The senior has started 31 consecutive games at right guard, helping the Huskies to a 22-9 record in those games.
Russek is coming off a junior season in which he totaled 26 tackles including six for loss in 10 games. The interior defensive lineman was the Bill Hauser Memorial Award winner as Tech's outstanding spring player in the offseason.
Scarlett, with two seasons as the starting quarterback under his belt, will take on even more of a leadership role in 2013. The junior turned in the top two passing seasons in school history in his first two years with 2,406 in 2011 and 2,596 in 2012. He was named All-GLIAC Honorable Mention as a sophomore a year ago.
Welch has been rock solid in the backfield for Tech. The senior fullback carried the ball 24 times - all in short-yardage situations - for 46 yards and six touchdowns a year ago. That earned him a spot on the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention list.
Michigan Tech has two weeks until its season opener Sept. 14 at Tiffin. The Huskies' first home game will come Sept. 21 vs. Walsh.
