HOUGHTON - A Lake Linden man set to stand trial for molesting an underage girl was sentenced to nine months in jail Monday for failing to register as a sex offender after an earlier offense.

Chad LaPointe, 27, appeared in Houghton County Circuit Court Monday.

"I think the recommendations are fair," said his attorney, David Gemignani. "I think the lesson leaned is to always register and verify. It keeps you out of jail, keeps you out of trouble ... you have to be registered, and you have to verify that on a quarterly basis."

LaPointe received credit for 216 days already served.

LaPointe is scheduled to go to trial on more recent criminal sexual conduct charges in November. He is charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a victim under 13, a 15-year felony; fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct with a girl at least 13 years old but younger than 16, a two-year misdemeanor; and two counts of accosting a child for immoral purposes, a four-year felony.
