Lila Liimatta

CALUMET - Lila Liimatta, 94, a former resident of Calumet, passed away Monday morning at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility where she resided for the past 2 1/2 years.

Lila was born May 14, 1919, in Rhode Island Location-Franklin Twp., a daughter of John and Emma (Soronen) Lampela. She attended local schools. She then attended Northern Michigan University for one year.

On October 30, 1937, she married Roy Liimatta. The couple lived in Osceola for most of their lifetime except for a short time when they lived in Highland Park, Mich. where she worked for the Defense Plant during WWII. Lila then worked as a Nurse Aide at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility and at Calumet Public Hospital until retiring in 1985.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy who passed away February 19, 1974. Also preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Edward, Reuben and Tom; two sisters, Lillian Bennetts and Shirley Erickson.

Lila was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet.

She is survived by children, David (Adele) Liimatta of Bootjack and Brighton, Mich., John (Gloria) Liimatta of Laurium and Marco Island, Fla., Vicki (Clyde) Mikkola of Calumet; eight grandchildren, Brenda (Davin) Helminen of Rochester, Minn., Lora Liimatta of Plymouth, Minn., Marya Liimatta of San Francisco, Calif., Gary (Deana) Liimatta of Milan, Mich., Mary Ann (Doug) Young of Huntington, Ind., Mark Liimatta of Auburn Hills, Mich., Matthew Mikkola of Laurium, Eric Mikkola of Osceola; 14 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; sisters, Rita (Elden) Tervo of Calumet; Leona (Ken) Ryynanen of Houghton; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and Christian Friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2013, in the First Apostolic Church in Calumet. Rev. Richard Eskola will officiate.

Friends may call on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home on Pine St. Calumet.
