The Daily Mining Gazette

CHASSELL - They went down to the wire, but Houghton's Isaac Stone edged Calumet's Devin Berg at the finish line of Thursday's Dollar Bay cross-country Invitational at the Chassell Ski Trails.

Stone edged Berg by two seconds at the end of the 5-kilometer course, finishing in 17 minutes, 45 seconds for his second victory of the season.

Berg's Copper Kings had the last laugh, as they took the team count with 28 points to Houghton's 34.

Each of the first eight finishers represented either the Gremlins or Copper Kings.

Ishpeming (107) was third, followed by Hancock (113), DB (117) and Jeffers (123).

On the girls' side, Calumet continued its control with 21 points. Hancock edged Houghton 51-56 for the second spot, with Dollar Bay (100), Jeffers (161) and Ishpeming (168).

Chelsea Jacques continued her run of good form, winning the event in 20:55, nine seconds ahead of Abby Tembruell of Hancock. Leah Kiilunen and Abbey Helppi of Calumet came in third and fourth, while Noelle Polakowski led the Gremlins in fifth.

Most of the local field will be back in action at the Houghton Invite Monday at the Tech Trails.
