John W. Aho

HOUGHTON - John W. Aho, 64, a resident of the Arbor Green Apartments in Houghton passed away Friday evening, September 20, 2013, in the Portage Hospital in Hancock following a short illness.

He was born on March 22, 1949, in Hancock, a son of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Tiura) Aho. He was raised in Trimountain and attended the Jeffers Schools.

Mr. Aho was a veteran having served with the United States Army.

John was a log scaler working for Connor Manufacturing in Baraga and Northern Hardwoods in South Range until poor health forced an early retirement.

Mr. Aho was united in marriage to the former Jean Loonsfoot and in December of 1992, she preceded him in death. On May 18, 1996, he was united in marriage to the former Shirley Destrampe.

John was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, following the Green Bay Packers and using his metal detector to find copper.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife; his granddaughter, Jacy; step-son, Donald Mentink Jr.; twin infant sisters; and his brother, Francis.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Aho of Houghton; his children, Juliet (Brad) Goyen of Baraga, Laurie Massie of L'Anse, Jena Aho of Baraga, Jolene (Tom Passmore) Aho of Brimley, Mich., Jamie Jones of Baraga, Denise (Mike) Michaelson of Chassell, Darin (Jaimee) Mentink of South Haven, Mich.; his grandchildren, Justine, Corey, Joey, Patrick, Jatika, Tristan, Jory, Tommy, Lily, Jeani, Nicole, Laura, Ava and Walter; his great grandchildren, Mya, Katie and Austin; his brother, Carl (Paulette) Aho of White Pine, Mich.; his sisters, Shirley Niemi of Dodgeville, Evelyn (Ray) McClung of Mass City, Dorothy Kinnunen of Baraga, Arlene Larson of Plainwell, Mich., Dolores (Bill) Davis of Plainwell, Mich., Janie (David) Putkela of Plainwell, Mich.; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

As requested, a private time to celebrate John's life will be held at a later time.
