MARQUETTE - Richard A. "Dick" Bessolo, 82, of Marquette, died Saturday morning, September 28, 2013, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans and under the care of Lake Superior Hospice after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Dick was born on February 28, 1931, in Ahmeek, to Phillip and Viola (Whitford) Bessolo. He graduated from Calumet High School in 1949. After a brief stint working for Plymouth Auto in Detroit and serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict in Alaska, he joined the Great Lakes Merchant Marines where he served for seven years. Upon concluding his service with the Merchant Marines, he owned and managed the Midway Bar in the Copper Country for seven years before completing his working career as a prison guard for the State of Michigan for the 22 years leading to his retirement at age 58.

Dick enjoyed gardening, reading, walking and traveling throughout the world including Africa, Europe and Mexico. He was a member of the American Legion and the Foresters of America.

Dick is survived by daughters, Cheryl (Randy) Richeson of Inman, S.C., and Gail (Greg) Duchow of Cedarburg, Wis.; two granddaughters, Rachel and Rebecca Mahan; his sister-in law, Enid Bessolo; as well as numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. Close family friends, Kathy and Bill Lammi and Carol and Jim St. Andre are also noted as survivors.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Gordon; and dear friend, Ruth Lessmier.

A private graveside service was held earlier today at the Park Cemetery with the Rev. Charles L. Tooman officiating and members of American Legion Post 44 providing military honors.

The family requests that all gifts in honor of Dick's life be donated to either the Lake Superior Hospice Association or the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

The Canale-Tonella Funeral Home is assisting the family where memories may be shared at canalefuneral.com
