BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say residents escaped safely during a fire at a Battle Creek senior citizens apartment complex that prompted an evacuation of more than 100 people.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports ( ) police officers smashed through glass sliding doors at the Lakeview Meadows complex in their rush to get people out Monday night. Evacuations included about 50 people in the building that burned.

Authorities say a woman was taken to a hospital after suffering chest pains.

Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz says the fire was reported at 8:50 p.m. and the first truck arrived four minutes later. Schmaltz says the first call about the fire indicated smoke outside the building and the fire spread rapidly through the attic of the structure.

Authorities say oxygen tanks kept in apartments exploded during the fire.
