Janis E. Danis-Perry

HANCOCK - Janis E. Danis-Perry, 69, of Hancock, passed away on Monday, October 7, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

She was born in Calumet on December 19, 1943, to the late Thomas and Marjorie (Filipovich) Neher. She graduated from Hancock High School with the class of 1961. She began her working career as a receptionist at the Upper Peninsula Power Company office in Houghton. She moved to Ann Arbor, where she became a surgical technician, working at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for two years. She then returned to the area to raise her family.

In 1981 she co-founded Janus Home Health Care (the first of its kind in our area) until the business was sold to Portage Health after nearly twenty years of service to the community. She was then employed at Portage Health until her retirement in 2011.

She married Lee Perry of L'Anse on February 14, 1998, and together they started L.L. Perry Gallery and Gifts in Hancock.

Jan was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock where she served as an Eucharistic Minister, belonged to the prayer shawl group, served as religious coordinator and taught CCD classes. She was a member of Noteworthy Womens Chorus and was a member of the Hancock Rotary Club. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed flower gardening, photography, art shows and garage sales.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tayen; a brother, James Neher; and father-in-law, Gene Perry.

She is survived by her husband, Lee of Hancock; her children, David Danis of Marquette, Christian (Erin) Danis of Clarkston, Mich., Michael (DeAnna) Danis of St. John U.S. Virgin Islands, Julie (Kevin) Blackstone of Dollar Bay, Kathy (Nick) Monkevich of Gladstone, Lynn-Anne (Phillip Jeannot) Danis of Whitmore Lake, Jeremiah (Randi) Perry of Whidbey Island, Wash., and Joshua (Tamara) Perry of Shreveport, La.; grandchildren Loghyn, Carson, Jackson, Olivia, Alexander, Lucian, Mykenzie, Madison, Natalie, and Samuel; sisters, Marilyn (David) Murphy of Hancock and Nancy (John) Otto of Lancaster, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Carol Neher of Hancock; her mother-in-law, Ruth Perry; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her pet dog George also survives.

A funeral mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon on Saturday in the Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Fr. Willian Ssozi to officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.

Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon.

The O'Neill-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock is assisting with the arrangements.
