CALUMET - The Michigan State Police Calumet Post has two new troopers.

Timothy Oliver and Kenneth Weismiller started work on Monday, three days after graduating from the 125th Trooper Recruit School, where they'd been since May 12. They were among 65 troopers in the class.

The area is close to home for Oliver, who grew up in Ironwood. He said he had been impressed by the Michigan State Police officers he'd seen before joining.

Kenneth Weismiller and Timothy Oliver, troopers at the Michigan State Police Calumet Post, stand outside the post Friday. Both officers, new recruit school graduates, began work on Monday.

"They're a professional agency," he said. "Their uniforms are crisp and clean, ready to go. They handle everything in a professional manner."

Weismiller comes from Holt, a community near Lansing. What appeals to him about the MSP is "the opportunity to go anywhere in the state, have authority anywhere in the state. It's a good way to give back to the state of Michigan."

The residents and fellow law enforcement personnel have been welcoming, they said. And they're excited about living in the area.

"I'm excited to finally be doing what we're doing after 21 weeks," he said. "I'm looking forward to the winter. I like the snow, and this place gets quite a bit."

Weismiller said he has a particular interest in responding to incidents.

"I like to investigate and figure out why something happens, and see what I can do to help," he said.

Oliver said he enjoys having personal contact with people in the community.

"It doesn't matter if it's a complaint or traffic work, I like to deal with people and talk with people," he said.
