Mark Pittillo, chef at Portage Health hands a serving of squash to Houghton fourth-grader Noah Sanders at Houghton Elementary School Thursday. Pittillo, local farmer Chip Ransom and Sara Salo health coordinator for the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department served up squash, grown by Ransom and cooked by Pittillo as part the Health Department’s Coordinated Approach to Child Heath, CATCH, program. The “Farm to School” taste testing lets children try a new vegetable they haven’t tried before. Those who took a chance on the squash received a sticker saying “I liked it.”
