L'ANSE - Welsh driver David Higgins leads the Lake Superior Performance Rally after eight stages.
The Rally America championship leader overtook challenger Ken Block (Park City, Utah) on the final stage Friday to carry a lead of 12.4 seconds into the second day. Antoine L'Estage of Quebec is third overall by a wide margin (1:35).
L'Estage created an unexpected obstacle for Higgins, felling a tree than landed in the road for Higgins to drive over, according to live updates from rally-america.com.
Higgins and Block essentially tied in the first short stage of the day at Green Acres, though after the second run through the gravel pit, Block took a one-second lead into Baraga County.
Block made his first significant gap after Stage 5 (Menge Creek South 2), which they won by five seconds.
Hancock-based driver Adam Yeoman suffered a mechanical problem on Stage 6 and was unable to finish the day.
The event will conclude with more stages in Baraga County Saturday before a finish celebration in Houghton Saturday night.
