PORTAGE TOWNSHIP - June Lillian (Kempainen) Drew, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, 90, who lived a full and happy life passed on to eternity on November 4, 2013.

Although she is gone from this earth her love will live on in our hearts forever.

June enjoyed her retirement at the Bluffs Retirement Community in Houghton, until several weeks ago when she suffered a fall and went on to spend her final weeks at the Omega House in Houghton. She spent these last weeks as she did the rest of her life, surrounded with the loving company of her family and friends.

June was born on June 18, 1923, in Dollar Bay, to parents August E. Kempainen and Sophia I. (Wayrynen) Kempainen. June was the third child of five between her folks. Her siblings are, Alice, Dault, Eilleen Wallace, Ruth Tuovila (sole surviving sibling), and David Kempainen.

June completed her school education in Dollar Bay. Following school June went on to work in Detroit, Michigan. During WWII June shared an apartment with her three sisters while working at a department store. She enjoyed visiting with her sisters during her lunch breaks and getting to know city life.

In 1946, June moved back to Upper Michigan and soon met the love of her life at a local dance.

Robert Frederick Drew and June Lillian Kempainen were wed on May 17, 1947. June and Bob were married for 60 blissful years.

June loved children and relished in caring for them throughout her life. June and Bob had four children together. They traveled the U.S., enjoyed camping, the beach, and taking walks. They loved entertaining family and friends as well. June loved cooking and not a Christmas went by without June's famous ham, raisin dressing, and "Bob's" baked beans. She was an excellent cook!

June was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hancock. She was also a wonderful poet and kept a daily journal. She had many interests that included gardening, reading, writing, and enjoying daily walks with her husband. June, who was voted the Bluffs "Cutest" resident, had a great sense of humor, never missing an opportunity for giggles.

Surviving are her children, Carol (Paul) Nutini of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., James (Mary) Drew of Lake Linden, Janice (Dave) Lundquist of Chanhassen, Minn., John (Carol) Drew of Portage Township; and nine grandchildren, Joe Nutini, Sarah Drew-Butzler (Brandon Butzler), Dan (Wendy) Nutini, Gregory (Brenda) Drew, Paula Drew (Daniel Liberatore), Alan Drew, Jen (Ben) Lindwall, Jeff Lundquist, Julie (Scott) Menk; and many great-grandchildren.

Services will be held in the First United Methodist Church in Hancock on Thursday, November 7th, 2013. Visitation at the church will begin at 10 a.m. with the service at 11 a.m. and a lunch to follow. The burial service will follow lunch in the Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Omega House in Houghton.

The O'Niell-Dennis Funeral Home in Hancock is assisting the family with arrangements.
