The Daily Mining Gazette

CHASSELL - Sandra M. Blom, 71, a former longtime resident of Painesdale and current Chassell resident, died unexpectedly on November 7, 2013, at her home.

She was born in Liminga, on July 13, 1942, a daughter of the late William and Saima (Luoma) Bohjanen, and was a 1960 graduate of the John A. Doelle High School.

On April 22, 1961, she was married to Kenneth Blom in South Range. He preceded her in death on April 26, 1990.

Sandra was employed for 20 years as a certified home health nurse's aide with the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department, retiring from there.

She was a member of Albert Paine United Methodist Church in Painesdale, was a former charter member of the South Range Aerie Eagles Auxiliary, formerly served on the Jeffers High School board and was a former volunteer for the Houghton County Fair. Sandra loved the Detroit Red Wings and was immensely proud of her Finnish heritage. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, solitaire and crocheting towels and afghans which she lovingly gave as gifts to her family.

Besides her parents and husband, Sandra was also preceded in death by two infant daughters, Tammy Lynn and Patti Ann; and a grandson, Sage Blom.

Surviving are three sons, Dean (Cindy) Blom of Ashburn, Va., Joey (Marie) Blom of Stanardsville, Va., Todd Blom of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Carson, Cora, Cassandra and Ryan Blom; three sisters, Sally (Don) Rule of Hancock, Shirley (Bill) Huwel of Cincinnati, Oh., and Sara (Dickie) Adams of South Range; her longtime significant other of 21 years, Don Salo of Chassell and his family; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dearly loved Blom-in-laws.

Sandra was fondly known as "Mom Blom" to many due to her generous, loving and joyful spirit. She will always be loved and dearly missed by her family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, in the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range, with Pastor Mary Laub to officiate.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday in the mortuary.

Spring burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Albert Paine United Methodist Church in Painesdale in memory of Sandra Blom.

Arrangements are being handled by Antila Funeral Service, Inc.
