The Daily Mining Gazette

HANCOCK - The Finlandia men's hockey team came even closer to an upset of No. 2-ranked St. Norbert, but their third-period lead only held up until the 11:08 mark.

The Green Knights grabbed the game-winner with 2:03 to play to get out of Houghton County Arena with a 3-2 victory and a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep.

A goal by ex-Michigan Tech Husky Patrick McCadden put the Green Knights up 1-0 at the 12:54 of the second, but the Lions struck back with two shorthanded goals in a 1:56 span, both scored by Shigenobu Kakudate.

The Lions carried their one-goal lead past the midway point of the third period but Michael Hill delivered the equalizer for St. Norbert, followed by the eventual game-winner from Cullen Bradshaw 6:51 later.

Troy Chandler made 29 saves for the Lions (0-4, 0-2 NCHA). The Green Knights outshot the Lions 32-18.

Finlandia plays its next four games on the road, starting with a series at St. Scholastica next weekend.

St. Scholastica swept the Finlandia women's team this weekend in Duluth by scores of 10-0 Friday and 10-2 Saturday.
