SWEDETOWN - Evelyn J. Rajaniemi, 70, of Swedetown, passed away Sunday morning in her home, surrounded by loved ones, following a battle with cancer.
She was born on July 29, 1943, in Hancock, a daughter of William and Jennie (Ruuspakka) Paavola. She attended local schools.
On April 18, 1964 Evelyn married Edwin Rajaniemi. The couple resided in Calumet. They were married 49 1/2 years.
In 1974 Evelyn graduated from Northern Michigan University with a degree in nursing. She then worked at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility as a LPN for 35 years until retirement.
Preceding her in death were her parents, William and Jennie Paavola.
She is survived by her husband, Edwin Rajaniemi; two daughters, Sue (Vernon) Kreivi and Cindy Joyal; one son, Don Joyal; one brother, Arvid (Anna) Paavola; eight grandchildren, Rebecca (Julio), Mikki (Bruce), Bill, Joe, Nikki (Chris), Elise, Donnie and Aaron (Andrea); 18 great grandchildren, Corina, Angelina, Julian, Benjamin, Cydney, Adysen, Dylani, Taylor, Grabriella, Easton, Danny, Elsie, Kyle, Zoey, Marissah, Breannah, Talon, Jensen; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Verna Roth; many cousins, nieces and nephews and very special friends.
Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed taking trips to the Casino, gardening and reading, as well as playing and listening to country music.
Funeral services will be held for Evelyn at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 2013, at the Erickson-Crowley-Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet. Pastor Rodney Johnson will officiate.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until 2 p.m.
